One Dallas-based company signed a $3 billion contract to build rooms containing power management equipment. Behind nearly every click and swipe you make is a network of energy-hungry computer servers and data centers. That’s because cloud based services, and especially the new world of artificial intelligence, require lots and lots of power.

AI generated summary

Cloud-based services, especially those that involve artificial intelligence, are driving a surge in energy consumption by computer servers and data centers. The demand for more power has led to a building boom in data center infrastructure, with companies like Compass Datacenters signing billion-dollar contracts to meet the growing need.

These data centers, resembling large secure warehouses, house hundreds of servers that generate significant heat. Cooling systems are crucial and costly for managing the high temperatures produced by the processing equipment. Major components in these centers include power generators, electrical equipment, and cooling systems, as the demand for energy-intensive AI tools like ChatGPT continues to grow, further propelling the expansion of data center spaces in energy-rich locations like Texas and Virginia.
