SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) - An expansion to a Sherman-based energy plant is expected to boost the Texas power grid. The Rayburn Energy Station, formerly known as Panda Energy, in Sherman, opened ten years ago. “It’s a state-of-the-art facility,” said Sherman Spokesperson, Nate Strauch, “The primary source of the electricity is natural gas but then it also has a secondary plant attached that uses the evaporation.” As Grayson County continues growing, more energy is needed.

An expansion of the Rayburn Energy Station in Sherman, Texas is set to increase the plant's capacity by more than 500MW, which will provide added support to the Texas power grid. The facility, operational for a decade, primarily uses natural gas for electricity generation and features an additional plant that utilizes evaporation. As Grayson County experiences growth, the need for more energy has prompted the decision to expand the plant, with the impending project expected to bolster grid reliability for the region.
Grayson Collin Electric Cooperative CEO, David McGinnis, emphasized that the expansion was deemed essential for the area's development and will be supported by the Texas Energy Fund, benefiting from low-interest loans. While the exact cost of the expansion remains undisclosed, the financial assistance from the state government will facilitate the project. The expansion is anticipated to commence by summer 2028, pending the completion of the permitting process, and though it will not result in additional employment opportunities, it is forecasted to have positive economic implications for Sherman through property tax benefits.
