There's a lot you can fit in the 268,820 square miles of Texas, including endless highways, cattle ranches and enormous metropolitan areas. In recent years, though, some of that space has been filled with batteries designed to boost the state's energy resources. According to a new report, that battery storage is likely to soon top the nation.

In Texas, the landscape now includes not just traditional features like highways and cattle ranches, but also a growing number of batteries designed to enhance the state's energy capabilities. According to a recent report by the United States Energy Information Administration (EIA), Texas is on track to surpass California in power sector battery energy storage systems. Currently holding 4,832 megawatts (MW) of battery systems, Texas is poised to increase its capacity to around 16,000 MW by 2025 and potentially reach 17,000 MW by 2026, outpacing California's current 9,920 MW.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has highlighted the importance of battery storage in light of past challenges like the 2021 winter storm that caused widespread power outages. Batteries play a crucial role in supporting the grid, especially during emergencies, and are seen as a key component of the energy transition. With Texas and California leading the way with 72% of active battery networks in the U.S., the focus on battery storage continues to grow in importance for energy reliability and sustainability.
